The Missing Key
“Are you okay?”
“Maybe you dropped it when you got out of your car.”
“Sometimes we look everywhere except the place we were just at.”
2. English Story
The Missing Key
It was a little after six in the evening when Minsu finally got home.
He walked up to his front door and reached into his pocket.
Nothing.
He checked his other pocket.
Still nothing.
“Wait… where’s my key?”
He opened his bag and searched through everything.
His wallet. His phone charger. A notebook. A pair of headphones.
But no key.
Just then, his neighbor Emily opened her door.
“Are you okay?”
“I think I lost my key.”
“Do you want some help?”
Minsu nodded.
“Yeah. I have no idea where it is.”
They looked around the front door.
Then they checked the stairs.
Nothing.
Minsu suddenly stopped.
“Wait a minute. I remember touching my pocket at work today. I think the key was still there.”
“So you might have left it at work.”
“Maybe.”
Minsu sighed.
“But the office is already closed. And it takes almost an hour to get there.”
Emily looked at him for a moment.
“Hold on. Did you check your car?”
“My car?”
“Yeah. You came straight home, right?”
Minsu suddenly remembered.
“Right. I did.”
They walked to the parking lot.
Minsu opened the car door and looked inside.
Nothing on the seat.
Nothing on the dashboard.
Then he looked down.
Something was shining on the floor.
He froze.
“Wait…”
He reached down and picked it up.
His key.
Emily laughed.
“You found it!”
Minsu stared at the key in disbelief.
“But how did it get here? I locked my car and walked home.”
“Maybe you dropped it when you got out of your car.”
Minsu laughed.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for this.”
Emily smiled.
“Sometimes we look everywhere except the place we were just at.”
Minsu looked at the key again.
“You know what? You’re right.”
He walked back toward his apartment.
“Next time I lose something, I’ll check the last place I was first.”
“Good idea.”
Minsu opened the door.
Then he looked at the empty wall beside it.
The next morning, he bought a small key holder and put it right there.
From that day on, whenever he came home, he put his key in the same place.
No more missing keys.
At least, that was the plan.

Next time I lose something, I’ll check the last place I was first.
